Churches are already poised to help people form a community. But their obsession is to focus on bringing people to god. If we can get them to refocus and work on creating community, but if people want to embrace god they would be more than able to.
How can churches focus on community? If they work with their local neighborhood and organize events for that neighborhood, like picnics or BBQs or yard sales. Those kinds of events will bring the neighborhood together into a community. Second level after creating the community is to offer their services to help people. AA meetings are already provided by churches. Offer martial counseling, helping deal with delinquent kids, help with arguing neighbors, etc.
Don’t push the religious aspect of the church onto people. Let the people come to you about the question of god. If the church helps people work together and make friends, then people that want to will already be open to exploring god.
